The amount of plastic in our environment grows daily. Unfortunately, we’ll never be able to eliminate plastic use entirely but we can find ways to repurpose it responsibly.
Recycled plastic is already used in numerous consumer products. Everything from garden furniture to kitchen utensils to clothing. Even roads are starting to incorporate it.
What is recycled PET (rPET)?
rPET stands for recycled polyethylene terephthalate or recycled PET. PET is a polymer that is widely used to make durable and recyclable plastic containers. For example, plastic Coca-Cola bottles are made from PET.
There is a huge amount of PET plastic waste in the world, so it is the ideal substrate for recycling. PET containers, after being washed and sorted, can be ground into flakes or pellets that are used as raw material in a range of polyester products such as carpets, clothing and much more.
Office screens: proudly South African with 100% recycled rPET
K-Mark’s new range of office screens uses 100% local recycled rPET. Choose from full-fabric frameless or powder-coated framed options.
Our new Latitude 2.2 range also allows you to create completely separate office spaces, private offices or meeting rooms.
Full-fabric frameless screens
Our full-fabric screens use a recycled polyester felt-like fabric. They can be used as desk dividers or to create pods and hives in open-plan offices.
Powder-coated framed screens
Our framed screens also use 100% recycled polyester fabric with a PVC edge. They offer flexibility, privacy and social distancing in the office.
Latitude 2.2
These larger screens can be used to create separate offices or meeting rooms. They come in a maximum size of 3m x 3m and 2.2m high. They can also support a glass or timber door.
The open top allows you to use the existing lighting and air-conditioning systems but there is the option to add a roof. The panels come in Perspex, acoustic, fabric or laminate finishes.
Advantages of rPET fabric for office screens and partitions
Apart from reducing the impact of plastic waste on our environment, rPET has plenty of other advantages for both consumers and manufacturers:
- It reduces landfill by removing bulky PET waste
- The recycling process is more energy-efficient than recycling glass or aluminium
- It’s lightweight and compact, making transport cheaper
- It’s a durable material resulting in a more hard-wearing product
- rPET is cheaper than regular PET making the end product more affordable
- It has a range of applications from hard substrates to soft fabrics
- It can be re-recycled many times over
