What does ergonomic mean?
Something is ergonomic if it’s designed specifically for user efficiency and comfort. Principles of ergonomic design can be applied to many items in the workplace, from computer keyboards to industrial tools. They can also be applied to workstation and office layouts.
When it comes to chairs, ergonomic design minimises the stress that long hours of sitting can put on the body.
A good ergonomic chair reduces pressure on the spine and joints. It encourages good posture and helps prevent stiff, sore muscles.
It provides this support not just when you’re still but also when you’re making typical movements. For example, it should support your spine when you lean back or stretch for an item on a desk or shelf.
By contrast, a badly designed, non-supportive chair can make it difficult to be productive. It can result in physical pain, over the short and long term.
What’s needed for ergonomic certification?
Not every chair that’s described as ergonomic is actually certified. So make sure before you buy. Ask to see an actual certificate.
To be judged ergonomic by an independent appraiser, an office chair has to meet specific standards of support. It also has to be adjustable in a variety of ways. This is so it can properly support people of different sizes and shapes.
An ergonomic chair should include the following features:
- adjustable seat height
- backrest with lumbar support
- adjustable back tilt
- waterfall-edge padded seat
- adjustable arm rests
- smooth-rolling castors
- a sturdy swivel base.

Like most of our chairs, you can customise the seat fabric to match your décor or corporate brand. And you can choose from a black nylon or chrome finish base.
The waterfall-edge seat has a moulded foam cushion that minimises pressure on the legs. Also, the armrests are height adjustable for optimal arm and wrist support.
